Any good free alternatives to QuickBooks?

I’m looking for a free accounting software as an alternative to QuickBooks. My current subscription is getting expensive, and I’d love some recommendations for tools that are free but have similar features for managing small business accounts.

Have you tried Wave? It’s completely free, no catch, and honestly feels like QuickBooks’ chill younger cousin. You get invoicing, accounting, and receipt scanning without paying a dime. Only thing is, if you need payroll or payment processing, they charge fees, but that’s optional. Another one? GnuCash. It’s open-source and a bit retro in design, so not super sleek, but gets the job done for managing finances. No subscription here, just some good ol’ desktop software vibes.

Also, check out Zoho Books. It has a free plan if your business earns less than $50K annually. Pretty comparable to QuickBooks with features like bank reconciliation, reporting, and expense tracking. If you don’t mind spreadsheets, there’s Always Airtable or Google Sheets templates too! Not true software alternatives, but hey, DIY can sometimes be gold.

Just don’t expect these to be as feature-packed or supported as QB. Free stuff always has its quirks, ya know? But for the price tag (zero $$$), can’t complain much! Maybe check one or two and see if they fit your needs before totally kicking QuickBooks to the curb.

I hear ya on the QuickBooks cost—it’s crazy how subscriptions sneak up on you. While I see Wave and GnuCash mentioned (solid picks, by the way), have you looked into Akaunting? It’s free and open-source like GnuCash but has a more modern web-based interface. Akaunting gives you invoicing, expense tracking, and even supports multiple users. The downside? It’s kinda barebones unless you pay for add-ons, so depends on how much basic functionality cuts it for you.

Another option is Manager. It’s desktop-based, free for single users, and has all the essentials—bookkeeping, receipts, billings. And it’s slicker than GnuCash looks-wise, though it doesn’t integrate with external apps as easily as QuickBooks does.

If you’re okay with a slight learning curve, Odoo’s free plan could work too. It’s open-source, offers a ton of financial tools and can scale if you grow, but the setup isn’t exactly plug-and-play.

Also, hot take: spreadsheets like Google Sheets with a solid template or prebuilt macros (try searching platforms like Tiller if ya don’t want DIY) can sometimes come closer to QB’s utility than people think. Just don’t expect fancy automation—it’s spreadsheet life.

Honestly, though, if you’re running payroll or heavy inventory management, none of the freebies will fully replace QB. There’s always trade-offs; you’ll prob end up compensating with extra manual effort or add-ons. Still, for keeping costs low, these tools could bridge the gap while you transition.
