I accidentally emptied my GoPro SD card before backing up some important footage, and now the videos are gone. I’m trying to figure out if deleted GoPro video recovery is still possible after the card was cleared, and what steps I should take right away to avoid making it worse.
I’ve been burned by missing GoPro clips more than once, and this is one of those recoveries where the details matter. Sometimes the footage is still sitting on the card. Start here, before you touch anything
Take the SD card out and stop using it.

Why these files are a pain
A lot of people treat deleted video like deleted photos. I did too at first. It’s not the same mess.
Newer cameras don’t always lay down one clean MP4 in one neat stretch. A GoPro often writes the main video, low-res preview files, audio, telemetry like GPS, thumbnails, and other metadata around the same time. On the card, one clip might be split into a pile of fragments instead of one tidy chunk.
So you get this weird result where software “finds” the MP4, restores it, and then the file won’t open or it plays half a second and dies. The scan found pieces. It didn’t rebuild the sequence right.
I keep seeing this with:
- GoPro Hero models
- DJI drones
- Insta360 cameras
- Recent Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic cameras
- Dash cams
This is one of the few cases where the scan alone isn’t enough. The reconstruction logic matters a lot.
What I’d try first
I’d start with Disk Drill.
The reason is simple. Its Advanced Camera Recovery mode was built for fragmented video from cameras like GoPros. Instead of assuming the file sits in one continuous block, it looks at scattered video fragments and tries to piece them back into a playable result. For action cams, drones, and dash cams, that approach makes more sense than a plain file-carving scan.
The rough workflow is this:
- Plug the SD card into your computer with a card reader
- Open Disk Drill
- Select the SD card
- Pick Advanced Camera Recovery
- Run the scan
- Preview what it finds
- Save recovered files somewhere else, not back to the same card
The preview part helps a lot. I like being able to check whether a recovered clip is usable before I dump a pile of files to disk. If the card is flaky, making a byte-to-byte image first is the safer route. Pros do this for a reason. I started doing it too after one card got worse during scanning. not fun.
Other tools people bring up
PhotoRec deserves a mention because it’s free and it digs up a huge range of file types. I’ve used it. It works, sort of, if your expectations are under control. The problem is it doesn’t have specialized camera-video reconstruction, it doesn’t preview results, and it tends to spit out a mountain of files you sort by hand. If you’ve got time and patience, fine. If you want a cleaner pass at broken GoPro footage, it feels rough.
UFS Explorer is a different animal. More serious tool, more knobs, more depth. In harder cases it can beat a lot of consumer apps. The tradeoff is the interface and workflow are heavier, and it still doesn’t give you the same dedicated Advanced Camera Recovery path aimed at fragmented action camera footage.
My order of attack
If I were dealing with deleted footage from a recent GoPro, DJI drone, or similar device, I’d go in this order:
- Check cloud trash, backups, LRV files, and any in-camera repair prompt
- Use Disk Drill first
- Use PhotoRec if I needed a free fallback
- Move to UFS Explorer if the case looked worse and I needed more control
If your footage matters, the main thing is speed and restraint. Stop writing to the card. Work from the card through a reader. Save recovered files somewhere else. Small mistakes stack up fast with these cameras, and yeah, I found that out the hard way.
Yes, recovery is still possible after you emptied the card, if you stopped using it right away. The big factor is overwrite. If your GoPro wrote even a few new clips after the delete, your odds drop fast.
I agree with @mikeappsreviewer on one part, stop touching the card. I disagree a bit on putting it back in the camera to see if it offers repair. I would not do that first. Some cameras write small files on insert, and thts a dumb risk when the footage matters.
What I’d do:
- Lock the SD card if it has a physical switch.
- Use a card reader, not the camera USB connection.
- Make a full image of the card first if the footage matters a lot.
- Scan the image, not the original card, if possible.
- Recover to your computer or another drive, never back to the SD card.
For GoPro files, Disk Drill is worth trying because it handles deleted SD card video better than a lot of generic file tools. If the card was quick-formatted, recovery rates are often still decent. If it was full-formatted, odds get worse. On flash media, TRIM usually is not active like on SSDs, so deleted footage often stays until overwritten. That helps.
Also check for .LRV and .THM files. They are not your full footage, but they sometimes save the day if the MP4 is toast.

I mostly agree with @mikeappsreviewer and @caminantenocturno, but I’m a little less optimistic about DIY if the footage was heavily fragmented. GoPro files can come back as half-working junk even when recovery software says “success.” That part annoys the hell out of people.
One extra thing I’d check that they didn’t really lean on: your computer’s hidden import caches. If you ever plugged the GoPro into Quik, Photos, Lightroom, Finder, Windows Photos, etc, sometimes there are temp imports, previews, or partial copies sitting around. Search by file type and date, not just filename.
Also, if you recover MP4s and they won’t play, don’t assume they’re dead. Sometimes the video data is there but the container is busted. A repair tool can occasionally rebuild the header. Not always, but it’s worth a shot befor you give up.
For software, Disk Drill makes sense here because GoPro SD card video recovery is one of those cases where camera-aware scanning helps more than generic undelete tools. I’d still avoid touching the original card if you can help it.

GoPro sometimes does a bit more than a simple delete, depending on whether you used Delete All, Format, or let the camera “fix” the card afterward. That matters because some recovery apps see a healthy file system but miss fragmented video chains completely. Other times the file system is toast, but the raw video chunks are still there.
My slightly contrarian take: I would not spend too long hunting for tiny leftovers like .LRV unless the main footage is clearly gone for good. They’re useful as a fallback, sure, but for anything important I’d focus first on recovering the real MP4s before doing side quests.

- Card size versus footage length. If you only lost a few short clips on a large card, recovery odds are better.

If Disk Drill doesn’t return playable files, that does not automatically mean the data is gone. It may mean the card needs a more forensic pass or the recovered MP4 container needs repair afterward.
So yes, recovery is still possible. I’d just treat this less like “undelete a file” and more like “salvage a damaged recording set.” That mindset usually leads to better decisions.
