How do I disable private browsing on my iPhone?

I’m trying to disable private browsing on my iPhone but can’t figure it out. I need to switch back to regular browsing mode for some tasks. Can someone guide me through this?

Private browsing, huh? Oh, it’s not some big mission to disable it. Honestly, you may have just missed a super obvious step—let me break it down:

  1. Open Safari (or whatever browser app you’re using). Seems simple, right? Don’t overthink it.
  2. Look for the little ‘Tabs’ button. It’s the one with the overlapping squares, bottom-right corner. Tap it.
  3. If you’re in private browsing, the background should be kind of dark and moody, like you’re hiding secrets from the FBI or something. At the bottom, you’ll see “Private” highlighted.
  4. Tap “Private” and just pick your regular browsing tab group. Poof, back to boring old non-private mode.

If you’re trying to like permanently disable private browsing (why though?), you can do it through Restrictions in Screen Time:

  • Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • Enable restrictions, then head to Allowed Apps or something similar and disable Safari altogether OR block adult content. It sneaks private browsing out of the options.

There. Solved in less time than it took you to post here. Enjoy your very public browsing.

Nobody’s got time for overly complicated steps, so here’s a straightforward addition to what @cacadordeestrelas said (because not everyone has to do everything their way, right?):

If tapping around Safari isn’t your vibe or you think you’ve already done it and it’s still not switching, maybe the browser just didn’t register the change. What I’d suggest is force closing Safari:

  • Swipe up from the bottom of your screen (yeah, multitasking view).
  • Find Safari and give it a big ol’ flick upward to close it.
  • Reopen Safari and double-check if it’s back in regular browsing mode. Sometimes apps just get stuck, okay?

But here’s what you’re not gonna hear a lot—if you’re using something like Chrome or another browser, the button layouts can differ. Most of the time, private/incognito mode lives under a “New Tab” menu or something sneaky in the settings (because why wouldn’t it?). Just poke around a little if Safari isn’t your usual.

Also, @cacadordeestrelas suggested Screen Time stuff for restricting private browsing permanently? That’s fine if you have a good reason to want this forever gone. Personally, it feels a little overboard. Like, who hurt you so much that you need every tab public? Anyway, if you’re working towards that, setting a passcode for Screen Time is critical so sneaky workarounds don’t pop up. But again, extreme. Probably just disabling it for now works, yeah?
